Threads of Musical Karma
The Scene:
45 years ago, Steve Gorn, woodwind player extrodinaire, ventures to Kolkata enchanted by the power of ragas played on bansuri (Indian bamboo flute) through encountering bansuri maestros Gour Goswami and Deboprasad Banerjee.
As young jazz saxophonists and musical seekers inspired by John and Alice Coltrane, Jonathan and Andrew Kay looked to India for non-western other ways of musical knowing, ultimately spending many years living in Kolkata, India learning the sacred art of raga music.
One day as the Kay brothers find themselves sitting with Deboprasad Banerji in Kolkata and realize how their musical fate is tied to Steve Gorn, and how a multi-generational search for beauty and musical truth is ongoing, growing, flourishing.
The Music:
Join Steve Gorn, Jonathan and Andrew Kay for an evening of transcultural improvisation drawing upon North Indian Ragas to guide their sonic-ritual of collective becoming, featuring bansuri, saxophones, clarinet, esraj and Himalayan singing bowls.
The trio will invoke contemplative sound-worlds for enjoyment, relaxation, healing, transformation, and transcendence.
