Repair Cafes re-emerge with a fundraising rummage sale

April 14 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Repair Cafe, an entirely volunteer program where people bring their beloved broken objects to be fixed by expert repair coaches, is bouncing back after the pandemic with a can-do attitude.

Attendance at Repair Cafe events and the need for a coordinator to support their events is becoming urgent. To raise money for a coordinator, the program is hosting an expansive special rummage sale event. The sale will take place on three days — April 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 90 Route 32 South in New Paltz. The sale, curated by Wendy Toman and Heather Deshais of Second Nature NY, offers gently-used donated items ranging from appliances and small furniture to retro clothing, LPs, CDs, jewelry, collectibles and one-of-a-kind finds.

There are more than 30 grass-roots Repair Cafe groups in the Hudson Valley region. At a recent New Paltz Repair Cafe there were 22 volunteers and 52 guests asking for repairs on items including some “really cool” lamps, vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, fans, a waffle iron, a stool, jewelry, an electronic keyboard, photos, a drawer, sweater, chair, skirt and an incense burner.

The repair coaches worked with guests, showing them how to fix things themselves where possible as well as doing repairs while they waited.

More information on this event and on Repair Cafes in the Hudson Valley, including their calendar, can be found at repaircafehv.org. The sale event effort is being supported by Sustainable Hudson Valley (sustainhv.org), fiscal sponsor of the Repair Cafe program.
