“Instruments of Light” on view June 18 – July 31

June 18 @ 12:00 pm - July 31 @ 5:00 pm

Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild will present “Instruments of Light,” an exhibition installation by Tessa Hughes-Freeland comprising a variety of cinematic elements. The exhibit will be on view from June 18 through July 31 at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts at 36 Tinker Street in Woodstock.

Always fascinated by the minimal and the maximal of cinema in this exhibition, Hughes-Freeland breaks down some of the elements of filmmaking and its physical materials through methods and techniques that she incorporates into expanded cinema performances that have always been a key part of her practice. Using projection machines as instruments of light along with a physical and immediate involvement with original and found materials she creates a personal symbolic language and aleatory iconography created by the manipulation of captured light and shadow.

This exhibition includes a variety of cinematic sculptural objects including various instruments of light, modified film equipment as well as films and installation.

“My films are ritualistic and atavistic, inspired by dreams, visions and imagination,” says Tessa Hughes-Freeland. “Sometimes the nucleus of an idea for a film starts with a single object.”

Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For additional information, visit www.woodstockguild.org or call (845) 679-2079.
