Global Write for Rights letter-writing event December 11

December 11, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Amnesty International USA Mid-Hudson is hosting its annual in-person and Zoom Global Write for Rights letter-writing event on Sunday, December 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Elting Library, located at 93 Main Street in New Paltz or on Zoom, meeting ID 86877043834/ or https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86877043834. Sample letters will be provided.

Amnesty International holds this annual event throughout the globe. Join them and thousands like them around the world to write letters to challenge systemic human rights abuses like torture and gun violence, as well as standing up for women’s rights, LGBTQI+ rights and climate justice. Each letter you write can change a life, and together changing lives across the world. Write on behalf of those whose voices have been silenced by powerful entities. When thousands of people write the same letter, the united voices cannot be ignored.

The group will be writing letters for Joanah, Netsai and Cecillia from Zimbabwe who were abducted, tortured and sexually assaulted after leading a protest. Shahnewaz from Bangladesh is facing years in prison for a Facebook post about the devastating environmental impact in his region. Zineb was killed by a teargas grenade in France and nobody has been charged. Write to demand justice for them and others.

Letters have the power to change lives. Throughout Amnesty International’s 60 years of human rights activism, many people have been freed because of the actions taken by activists who participate in Write for Rights. At home be prepared with letter-writing paper, envelopes and pens. Organizers will provide all materials for those attending in person.
