Bridge Music dance project — a film premiere

September 17 @ 9:00 pm

Livia Vanaver, founder and Artistic Director of The Vanaver Caravan and composer Joseph Bertolozzi have announced the premiere screening of The Bridge Music Dance Project September 17 at Story Screen Theater in Beacon and September 18 at the Rosendale Theater in Rosendale.
One summer night in June, 2022, 200 feet above the Hudson River, dozens of dancers convened on the Walkway Over the Hudson to celebrate the connecting force of bridges to their communities. The Bridge Music Dance Project is a documentation of that performance. Karnatic dance juxtaposed alongside hip-hop, Soca, tap, post-modern, ballet, world, Latin fusion and more, each dance interpreting a movement from Joseph Bertolozzi’s Bridge Music, an opus using only sampled sounds from the Mid Hudson Bridge as Bertolozzi drummed upon it like a percussion instrument.
Bridge Music is ordinarily heard in a free and open-to-the-public sound art installation from April 1 to October 31 on the Mid Hudson Bridge itself by accessing the pedestrian sidewalk from either Gerald Drive in Poughkeepsie or Johnson-Iorio Park in Highland and pressing a button on the “Listening Stations” mounted on the Bridge’s towers, like a jukebox. For those unable to walk the bridge, a “Park Radio” operates 24/7/365 broadcasting from within the parks flanking the bridge on 95.3FM.
This collaboration with Vanaver, whose dance company celebrates their 50th Anniversary this year, brought an entirely new dimension to the compositions, intersecting dance with a public performance and a live audience. “Joseph and I have been dreaming of this event ever since the Bridge Music installation went live in 2009,” said Vanaver. She organized 12 choreographers who work in the Hudson Valley to choose a section of the music and create their own dance, in their own style with their own dancers.
She then enlisted the skills of filmmaker Jesse Brown of HUDSY to document the performance with a five-camera shoot. She goes on to say the result is a film that “celebrates coming together in dance, expression, connection and community, with great love of the river and our beautiful Hudson Valley.”
The Beacon screenings will include a live pre-screening presentation by Bertolozzi describing the Bridge Music installation and a post-screening discussion with Bertolozzi, Livia Vanaver and director Jesse Brown. The Rosendale screening will feature Bertolozzi and Vanaver at the discussion. Beacon show times are 7 and 9 p.m. and Rosendale at 4 p.m.
